Resources For Strings Students

Youth Orchestras

Butler Youth Philharmonic Orchestra-- please consider auditioning for this group if you have taken private lessons and want to be in a full symphony orchestra.  Visit the website https://www.butlerphilyouth.com/ to get additional information.  This group is  for dedicated high school players.  For audition information, please visit their website.
Miami Valley Symphony Youth Strings is another fine group that rehearses in Kettering.  They will play music about on par with our 8th grade and some of our easier high school level music and often collaborate with the Miami Valley Symphony (the adult group) and often play popular music in addition to classical.  Please see  www.mvso.org.
Alternative Strings- If you are interested in learning how to play Jazz, Bluegrass, or Fiddle music, the Kettering based School of Strings is for you.  Please see  www.theschoolofstrings.com/ for additional information.  There are classes for beginners and for advanced students of all ages-- it's a very fun program!
Dayton Youth Philharmonic Orchestras--
There are three orchestras in the DPYO organization- and all are entry by audition only at the end of May.  Dayton Junior Strings is a string only group for grades 4-8. Dayton Youth Strings is a string only group for grades 8-12. Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is a full symphony for grades 9-12.  All three groups rehearse on Sundays and have two-three performances per year.  The Youth Orchestra performs on the stage of the Schuster in downtown Dayton.  Please visit their website for further details regarding auditions.

High School Concert Uniform

Concert Dress
For all concerts, unless otherwise stated, students will wear concert uniforms.  Failure to wear uniforms will result in exclusion from the concert and zero on your grade unless we can find a school-uniform to fit you so that you may borrow it while on stage (extremely limited sizes available).  Guys– button down dress shirt with tie and slacks.  Girls- Must cover the arms completely and any skirts must go below the knees, otherwise wear dress pants. Black shoes are a must for everyone.  All black fabric MUST be solid black– nothing with graphic prints or words on them. Must be dressy type clothing.  I will still make available boro blue neckties for those wearing button down dress shirts (guys mostly).
**students who are non-binary may choose either option to suit themselves.

If you need financial assistance for uniforms, please let the SOA know. We are happy to help!
